Why I Always Screen Song Lyrics (+ a Spotify Playlist)

Debora Manusama

Ever since I was a teenager, I have always been fascinated with song lyrics. I would read them off the cassette sleeves, magazines, and at this day and age, on Google. A lot of them were in English, which is still not my first language, but I memorized them anyway. I think that's how I learned to speak English, honestly (thank you, MTV!).

Now that I am older with more responsibilities as a mom, I do it even more diligently. WHY? Because I truly believe that our ears and eyes are our biggest GATES OF CHANGE.

Whatever we allow to enter out brains and hearts through them, will somehow affect us and even provoke change in us. If you listen to promiscuous songs 24/7, more than likely, you would want to bang all the time. I've met people like this, I used to be one too, and trust me, it's true.

This photo above cannot say it any better! And although you might think, "Oh little kids don't understand, so it doesn't matter," it DOES  matter. Why? Well I believe, that when you listen to music with bad lyrics or music about partying carelessly, or gangsters, or sex (including the ones that are subtle!) around your kids, you are developing an appetite to listen to these kinds of music in your child.

Does this mean I only listen to "clean" music or Christian music? Of course not!! Because some music that's labeled "Explicit" are pretty good, like the ones by Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, and Chance the Rapper. But listen to them occasionally in private, with my headphones on, when I do my work. But what I put on the speaker or play in the car is always uplifting, positive, and awesome!

It's crazy that when people think of "kid-friendly" they think of "kid-bop" music. Which to me is disgusting. Sorry, I know this is a strong word, but I honestly am NOT a fan of it! All they do is record kids singing ADULT songs, and call it kid-friendly! Really??

I mean, do you really think your 2 year-old should be listening to how Taylor Swift thinks this guy is so bad but he looks so hot and although she shouldn't be with him, she would just get with him and make the mistake? I mean, really?

And the sad thing is, these "kid-bop" albums are played in libraries, grocery stores, toy stores, and every other public places that are meant for young children. One of them even played Avril Lavigne's Happy Ending sung by little girls at one point.

I'm DONE.

So I decided to make my own playlist that contains a DIVERSE genre of music, so I can expose my child with different tones, and tunes, and instruments. So that he has this rich taste of music, that will enjoy more than just bubble gum poppy tunes.

I screened all the lyrics and made sure that they don't have any sexual ineundos or cursing or anything, and that even though some of them are about adults being in love, they're positive and uplifting. HERE IS THE PLAYLIST! Feel free to share it and follow it. I add songs often :) They're good for 4 hours and 25 minutes.

One of them called "The Nature" is labeled "Explicit" because it's from an explicit album, but it's safe so don't worry ;) If you want to watch the videos of some of the songs I feature here. Here it is!

2. Smile by Tedashii
